What is OUTS and what's new in 2011???
2011 is a big year for the Oceanside Umpire Training Seminar and our staff. This will be the third seminar of our short history, and things are new and improved for this season!
2010's seminar was a little different than our first in 2009. We had the opportunity to have attendees of the Harry Wendelstedt School for Umpires and the Jim Evans' Academy of Professional Umpiring come to our camp to have the opportunity to be seen by evaluators from the Northwoods League, along with other independent collegiate and professional leagues, in real game situations. Each person in attendance ended up in an independent league of some sort. Harry and Jim do an excellent job teaching the fundamentals of umpiring, and it was great to add our expertise in game situations, as well as the in's and out's of working in a professional league setting, to help round these young men "into shape", for lack of a better word, for their upcoming seasons.
In this go-round, we hope to have all these evaluators in attendance once again, as well as representatives from the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, one of the top independent professional leagues in the country. We also will be adding two new supervisors to the staff in 2011, both umpires in the Atlantic League this season, Andrew Vincent and Marty Bauer, and we are extremely excited about that as well!
What's new this coming year includes two new options for housing, including your choice between a hotel, or for a lower price, "barracks" style housing, but both options include three meals per day at the Cocoa Expo cafeteria. You can read more about the housing options by clicking here.
When the O.U.T.S. concept was realized in 2008, the intention of the school was to give umpires who can't afford, from a time or cost basis, a five-week umpire school, or those who wanted something more than the weekend clinics around the country. All of these schools and clinics have taught umpires very well, but we are simply a new alternative. Most of our staff are graduates of the professional umpire schools, and have a tremendous respect and gratitude for what we learned from them. That's why we don't compete with them, we simply offer you an alternative.
